What is the UFC?

UFC, or the “Ultimate Fighting Championship,” is a martial arts combat sport organization. In the sport, two competitors fight in order to achieve complete dominance over one another by using martial arts techniques. With few rules, the UFC was first known as “no holds barred fighting,” allowing fighters to use different martial arts techniques in a multitude of realistic yet unregulated situations. Throughout the world, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has become increasingly popular. To put it simply, this championship has competitors fighting for the title of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

How did the UFC start?

The UFC originated as a tournament to find the world’s best fighter, started by Art Davie and Rorion Gracie. It was an “anything goes,” tournament, allowing fighters to use any techniques possible in order to beat their opponent. The tournament set out to prove which fighting style would be the best in different types of situations. At the start, many fights were violent and brutal, having a small set of rules. Through time, the UFC has formed a larger set of rules and has built itself into a true sporting event.

What are the rules for the UFC?
In the initial years of UFC, there was a minimal set of rules. Yet as time went on, the set of rules started to grow. The current rules were established by the New Jersey Athletic Board. Each match has five rounds, each having a total time limit of five minutes. Each round must be observed by a referee, calling fouls on players and awarding them points. Some fouls include attacking an opponent while he is on break, kicking the head of an opponent, and biting or gouging of any kind. Fouls may deduct points from a player, or disqualify him completely from a match. The referee also has the power to stop or pause a match if he feels it is appropriate.

How do matches end?
A match can end in one of four ways. Submission occurs when one opponent taps his mat three times or verbally submits from the competition. A knockout occurs when a player is knocked out or physically unable to continue fighting. A judge can also end a match by declaring a winner or declaring a draw between the two opponents. Lastly, a match can end in disqualification or forfeit.
