What is Massage?

A massage is a type of therapy that uses pressure and motion to promote a beneficial response in a patient. The pressure and motion is used on muscles, tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints to help relieve stress and pain in an individual. As a type of therapy, a massage is helpful to an individual by relieving stress, healing injury, and managing pain. During a massage, one will be told to lie on a table face up or face down in preparation for the massage. Through the massage, the masseuse may ask for the patient to turn one way or the other in order for the massage to be the most beneficial for the him or her.

What is a Thai massage?
A Thai massage, or Nuat Phaen Boran, is a type of massage that incorporates stretching and hard massage techniques. In this type of massage technique, the patient is told to sit on a floor mat while he or she is in pajamas. The masseuse then stretches the patient into various positions. These positions are said to be similar to yoga positions, as the patient is stretched and given rhythmic pressure to all areas of the body.

What is a chair massage?
A chair massage is the most common and convenient method of massage therapy. A session lasts about 15-30 minutes, and it involves a patient sitting face down on a chair with his or her clothes still on. This type of massage promotes better circulation and muscle stimulation, while relieving stress. The massage is performed on the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and lower back. A chair massage can be done almost everywhere, ranging from in a bedroom to in a shopping mall.

What are some other types of massages?
There are countless types of massages. Some of the more common categories of massage therapy include deep muscle therapy, deep tissue massages, foot massages, muscle and energy techniques, facials, scalp massages, and stone massages.
