Alternative medicine is types of treatment that are
not considered orthodox or conventional. According to the National
Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, it is a “group of
diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that
are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine".
What is complimentary medicine?
Complimentary medicine is alternative medicine used with conventional
medicine and treatment. This can sometimes be harmful when conventional
medicines and herbs used in alternative medicine have a bad reaction.
The abbreviation CAM stands for complimentary and alternative medicine.
What are some types of alternative medicine?
The most common forms of alternative medicine are yoga, meditation,
herbal treatments, and nutritional diets such as Adkins. Other common
types of alternative medicine include folk medicine, herbal medicine,
diets, homeopathy, healing through faith, chiropractic practices,
acupuncture, naturopathy, the use of herbs, massage, and music therapy.
What are the downsides to alternative
medicine?
Like all types of medical treatments, alternative medicine is not
completely risk free, although it is quite efficient. Critics of
alternative medicine also argue that alternative medicine may not be as
effective as people wish. This may cause delayed treatment of a symptom
with conventional medicine, causing the symptom to get worse and cause
other malignant consequences.
